Behind the Stories: A milestone for Captain America June 08, 1:53pm
In March of 2007, something happened which truly rocked the comics world. Steve Rogers, the first and by far the most well-known character to operate under the codename "Captain America", was shot and killed while entering a courthouse after the events of the Marvel miniseries "Civil War". For the next two years Rogers’s former sidekick James "Bucky" Barnes – the Robin to Steve’s Batman – has taken up the name and career of Captain America in his mentor’s place. Bucky has filled in capably for Rogers in both the solo "Captain America" series as well as team or crossover books like "New Avengers" and "Secret Invasion", but for entire generations of fans Steve Rogers will always be the one true Captain America.

This month Marvel Comics reaches a milestone with the 600th issue of "Captain America". This number was arrived at by combining the totals of the various Cap solo series over the years, which is how the current run jumps from #50 in May to #600 in June. To mark the occasion, Marvel and Diamond Comic Distributors are teaming up to release "Captain America" #600 to the public two days early – on Monday, June 15 instead of the normal new comics delivery day on Wednesday.

Because of the anticipation of this historic milestone issue, Marvel has announced that "Captain America" #600 has already sold out of its first printing even before the issue has seen a single store shelf. The issue is a lock for a second print run, with perhaps even more down the road, so anyone who is interested in picking up a copy should contact the fine folks at Play the Game Read the Story and let them know that you want one.

So why, aside from the obvious milestone issue number, is this particular comic book expected to be such a hot commodity? Well, Marvel has let it be known that fans should expect some sort of huge announcement or plot twist to take place within the pages of this super-sized issue. Speculation on just what this surprise may be has run rampant, but no one really knows for sure exactly what to expect when the issue hits stores on June 15. One teaser image making the rounds is for a miniseries debuting this summer from the man who writes the current "Captain America" series, Ed Brubaker. The image features a single white star on a black backdrop with the word "REBORN" in prominent text underneath. The logo appears to me to look similar to the star found on Cap’s costume. Could it be signaling the return of a certain deceased superhero? Or is it just a red herring designed to throw us avid readers off of the trail? I haven’t figured it out quite yet, but I know I’ll be picking up my issue of "Captain America" #600 to see what the fuss is all about, and I encourage you to do the same!
